Alpro

Alpro began in Belgium as a soya specialist and is now part of Danone, making plant drinks, yogurt alternatives and desserts from soya, nuts, oats and coconut. The packs we carry show the Vegan Society trademark and the Certified B Corporation mark, and the label states that its soya is non GM and grown without deforestation.

Its drinks sit in plant milk, part of our chilled and dairy department. The Barista line comes in almond, coconut and soya, each developed with baristas to foam under a steam wand and hold its texture in a latte or flat white. The dessert pots are in chilled desserts: soya based, with added calcium and vitamins, in caramel, chocolate and vanilla flavours.

Shake the carton well and chill it before you steam. Heat it gently and stop well short of boiling, because plant drinks lose their foam and can split when overheated, and the pack advises against steaming twice. Soya gives the firmest foam for latte art, almond is lighter with a nutty finish that suits iced coffee, and the coconut and soya blend makes a softer, rounder cup. For masala chai, brew the tea and spices in water first, then add the drink at the end and warm it through. The dessert pots go into a lunchbox as they are, or over sliced banana and berries.
