Toilet rolls, toilet tissue or loo roll: whatever your household calls it, it is the one item nobody wants to run out of. Most UK tissue is two ply, two thin layers pressed together for softness and strength, with three ply and quilted rolls sitting above it for extra thickness.

Choose by what matters at home. Two ply suits most families and goes further per roll, while quilted and three ply rolls feel thicker and use fewer sheets per wipe. Look at the sheet count as well as the number of rolls, because rolls of the same size can hold very different lengths. Many tissues are now made from paper certified to come from responsibly managed forests, which the pack will state, and most break up easily in water, so they are safe for septic tanks and older plumbing.

Store spare rolls somewhere dry, away from the bath and shower, since damp tissue tears and goes limp. A household of four usually gets through several rolls a week, so buying a few at a time with the groceries saves a separate trip. Toilet rolls sit within personal care and household, with laundry, sanitary pads and kitchen foil and wraps.
