Malt drinks are powders made from malted barley and wheat, often with milk solids, cocoa and added vitamins, designed to be mixed with milk. Malting means sprouting the grain and drying it, which develops a sweet, biscuity flavour. They are part of our milk and malt drinks range. Some are chocolate-led, some are plain malt, and badam mixes add almond and saffron.
In India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, a malted drink before school is a long tradition, and many adults keep a jar for an evening cup. Stir it into warm milk, or blend it cold with ice and banana for a quick shake. Chocolate malt powder can be sprinkled over ice cream, and badam drink mixes make an easy version of badam milk, served warm or chilled at festivals.
For a smooth drink, add two or three heaped teaspoons of powder to a glass, mix to a paste with a little warm milk, then top up with hot or cold milk. Replace the lid straight away, as malted powders absorb damp and set hard. For children's nutrition products, see nutrition drinks, and for plain milk use milk powder.
