Laundry

Laundry covers the products for washing and caring for clothes and household linen: detergent powders and liquids for the machine, washing bars and soaps for hand washing and stains, fabric conditioners for softness and scent, and gentle detergents for delicates. In many South Asian households, laundry soap bars are still used alongside a washing machine, for scrubbing collars, cuffs and stubborn stains before a wash.

Choose by fabric and water. Biological detergents contain enzymes that break down food and sweat stains, good for everyday cottons and school uniforms. Non-biological detergents are gentler, often preferred for sensitive skin and babies' clothes. Silk saris, chiffon dupattas and embroidered suits need a mild, wool and silk detergent and a cool hand wash, or a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh bag. London's hard water means a little extra detergent or a water softener helps whites stay bright.

Turmeric and curry stains are the classic problem of an Indian kitchen: rinse the stain in cold water, rub with a laundry bar, then dry the garment in direct sunlight, which fades the yellow remarkably well. Avoid hot water on turmeric, as it can set the stain. Laundry belongs to personal care and household, alongside hair oils and body massage oils.
