The sponge scourers are the first of them: a soft sponge on one face for plates and glasses, a green abrasive pad on the other for whatever has caught on the bottom of a pan.

Wash up with the soft side, then turn the sponge over for a baked on roasting tin, the hob, the rim of the sink or the bars of an outdoor grill. Keep the scouring face away from non stick coatings and polished surfaces, where the abrasive will leave fine scratches. Rinse and squeeze each sponge after use and stand it somewhere it can dry, since a sponge left wet in a dish holds the smell of the last wash up.
