Croco is a Romanian bakery business whose crackers and salty snacks are a familiar sight in Romanian homes and shops, and we carry them for Eastern European shoppers and anyone who likes a well seeded cracker. The sesame and poppy crackers, labelled "susan-mac" in Romanian, are thin, square and lightly salted, with the seeds baked onto the surface so every bite has a toasted, nutty edge.
They sit in crackers, part of our snacks and noodles department. Compared with a plain cream cracker they are richer and more savoury, and the poppy seeds add a slight crunch that holds up under a topping.
In Romania these crackers go on the table with soup, with a plate of cheese and cold meats, or straight from the pack with a beer. Top them with soft cheese, salted butter, a spoon of aubergine salad or hummus, or a slice of cheese and tomato. They also make a quick South Asian snack: spread with green chutney and a little chaat masala, or serve them beside dips at a party where some guests want something lighter than fried food. A handful in a lunchbox keeps better than bread.
Fold the inner bag shut after opening and keep the crackers in a cool, dry cupboard, as damp air softens the seeds. For more savoury crunch, browse namkeen and crisps, or compare the baked rusks and khari on the next shelf.
