Essential Power Caustic Soda is sodium hydroxide in granules, the heavy duty option for a drain that a plunger will not shift and for the grease that builds up outside. One kilogram goes a long way, since unblocking a drain takes 100g in a litre of cold water and a path or a set of bins takes 125g in five litres. It is a strong alkali and it needs gloves and eye protection every time. Gentler products for daily cleaning sit in our Household Cleaning range.
How to use it
Always add the granules to the water, never water to the granules, because the mixture heats up fast. For a slow drain, stir 50g into a litre of cold water and pour the lot down; for a blocked one use 100g and leave it half an hour. For paths, drives and brickwork, mix 125g into five litres, scrub it in with a stiff brush, leave it 20 minutes and rinse everything down with cold water.
