Bru

Bru is an Indian coffee brand from Hindustan Unilever, best known for instant coffee blended with chicory, the roasted root that gives South Indian coffee its dark colour and slightly bitter depth. It is one of the most familiar coffee names in Indian homes, especially in the south, where many families drink coffee more than tea.

The Bru range we carry sits in two collections. Our instant coffee shelf holds its classic coffee and chicory blend in jars and refill pouches, plus a premium edition, and our filter coffee shelf holds its ground coffee and chicory for the brass or steel filter.

For a quick filter-style coffee, whisk instant Bru with a little sugar and a spoon of water until pale and creamy, then pour on hot milk. For the traditional version, pack the filter powder into the upper chamber of a South Indian coffee filter, pour on boiling water and leave the decoction to drip for fifteen minutes or so. Mix the decoction with boiled milk and sugar, then pour between a tumbler and davara to froth it up.
