Hartley's is a British brand with roots in nineteenth century Lancashire, where William Hartley began making jam, and it has been a fixture of British cupboards ever since. Today it is best known for its jelly, sold as a block of tablets to dissolve at home and as ready-to-eat jelly pots.
We carry Hartley's in our jam collection, with fruit flavours such as apricot, strawberry and blackcurrant, and in our jelly collection, where the jelly tablets and ready-to-eat fruit jelly pots sit side by side.
Jam goes on toast, scones and crumpets, into Victoria sponge, jam tarts and Bakewell tarts, and many South Asian households spread it on paratha or roti for children. Jelly tablets are dissolved in boiling water, topped up with cold water and set in the fridge, then layered into trifle, served with ice cream or set in small cups for parties. Jelly pots are ready to eat from the fridge and fit straight into a lunchbox. Some cooks also add set jelly cubes to falooda with rose syrup and vermicelli.
Refrigerate jam once opened and use a clean spoon each time, and keep unopened jelly tablets and pots in a cool cupboard. Check the label if your household avoids gelatine, and choose an agar-set dessert for vegetarian guests. To compare, browse our agar and gelatine range and the Ahmed shelf.
