Feleacul glucose, labelled glucoza on the pack, is dextrose powder, a simple sugar sold in small sachets for home baking and drinks. It looks like icing sugar but is less sweet, and it is a common baking ingredient across Central and Eastern Europe.
We list Feleacul in our glucose collection, within sugar in the baking, sugar and desserts department. There is a plain glucose and a vanilla flavoured version, which adds a soft vanilla note wherever the powder goes. Glucose powder is a different product from the liquid glucose syrup used in sugar work and sweet making.
Bakers use glucose powder in sponge cakes and biscuits for a softer crumb and even browning, and in homemade ice cream and sorbet to keep the texture smooth. The vanilla version can be dusted over pancakes, doughnuts and cakes like a vanilla sugar, or stirred into whipped cream. Some people stir glucose into water, lemon juice or a glass of nimbu pani on a hot day. Because it is less sweet than ordinary sugar, recipes swapping one for the other may need adjusting, so taste as you go.
Glucose powder absorbs moisture easily, so fold the sachet closed and keep it in an airtight jar in a dry cupboard. To compare, see our caster and icing sugar and the essences shelf for other vanilla flavourings.
