East End Linseed is whole brown linseed, also called flaxseed or alsi, small glossy seeds with a mild, nutty taste. Per 100g the pack lists 18g of protein and 27g of fibre. In Punjabi homes alsi is roasted and ground into winter pinni and laddoo with jaggery and ghee, and it is just as useful sprinkled over breakfast. Find more seeds in our Seeds range.
How to use it
Dry roast the seeds in a pan until they start to pop and smell nutty, cool, then grind them. Mix the ground alsi with atta, ghee, jaggery and nuts for alsi pinni, or add a spoonful to roti dough and paratha. Stir ground linseed into porridge, yoghurt and smoothies, or bake whole seeds into bread and crackers. The pack says to cook before eating, so roast or bake it first, and grind small batches as you need them.
