East End Klowunji Seeds Black are nigella seeds, the small, jet black, teardrop shaped seeds also sold as kalonji or kalo jeera. They taste gently bitter and oniony with a hint of oregano, and they are the black specks on naan, in lime and mango pickles, and in the Bengali five spice panch phoron. The 400g bag suits kitchens that bake bread or make pickles at home. Find more nigella seeds in our Kalonji (Nigella) range.
How to use it
Press a pinch into naan, kulcha or flatbread dough before baking, or sprinkle over samosa pastry and savoury biscuits. Fry half a teaspoon in mustard oil with fennel, cumin, mustard and fenugreek seeds to make a panch phoron tarka for dal and vegetables. Stir it into mango, lime and mixed vegetable pickles, or toast it lightly and scatter over roasted squash and potatoes. Cook it before eating, as the pack directs.
