Ahmed Blackcurrant Jelly Crystals make a bright purple, fruity jelly from Ahmed Foods of Karachi, a Pakistani food maker established in 1952. The crystals are mostly sugar with carrageenan as the setting agent, so the jelly is set without gelatine, along with adipic acid and sodium citrate for a sharp, fruity edge and a simulated blackcurrant flavour. The box is marked instant set and makes four servings, ready for trifles, children's parties, falooda glasses and fruit jelly bowls. Browse more set desserts in our Jelly range.
How to use it
The full recipe is printed on the inside of the box, so open it out and follow the water quantities given there. Jelly crystals are dissolved in hot water, topped up with cold and left to cool until set, so allow time in the fridge before serving. Set the jelly in small glasses or a mould, cube it for falooda with rose syrup, basil seeds and vermicelli, or layer it under custard and cream for a trifle. Slices of fresh fruit can be stirred in just before it sets.
