Hiru Traditional Jaggery Balls are Sri Lankan jaggery made from cane sugar blended with 20% coconut treacle, the syrup boiled down from coconut palm sap. The mixture is poured into small round moulds and set, giving dark, glossy rounds with a soft fudge texture and a rich caramel and toffee flavour from the treacle. Each round is easy to break off and measure. The 350g pack is made in Sri Lanka and marked vegan.
How to use it
Grate or crush a round and melt it with a splash of water to make a quick syrup for kokis, kavum, aluwa or Sri Lankan coconut pancakes, pani pol, where it is cooked with grated coconut and cardamom. In Indian kitchens it works in the same way as gur: stir it into payasam and kheer at the end of cooking, sweeten tamarind chutney, or melt it with ghee and toasted sesame for festive ladoos. It is also traditional with a cup of plain tea.
