Hiru Traditional Jaggery Powder is Sri Lankan jaggery made from cane sugar blended with 20% coconut treacle, then ground to a fine, free-flowing brown powder. The coconut treacle gives it a deeper caramel and toffee flavour than plain cane gur, and the powder form means no chopping or grating: it spoons and dissolves like soft brown sugar. The 350g pack is made in Sri Lanka and marked vegan.
How to use it
Use it spoon for spoon in place of sugar in tea, coffee and porridge, or in baking where a moist, caramel note suits, such as banana bread and flapjacks. For payasam or kheer, stir it in after the milk has thickened and the pan is off the heat, so the milk does not split. It dissolves quickly for tamarind chutney, sambar and jaggery syrup for ladoos, and it is easy to measure when making Diwali sweets in quantity.
