MD is the Sri Lankan pantry under one name: woodapple and mango jams, cordials, kithul treacle, jackfruit in brine, sambols, pickles and curry mixes. The jars and tins that make a kitchen in Britain smell like home in Colombo.
MD is one of Sri Lanka's best known food brands, found in households across the island and in Sri Lankan shops abroad. It is known above all for tropical fruit jams and cordials, and for tinned and jarred versions of the vegetables, sambols and pickles that Sri Lankan cooking depends on.
From MD we carry tinned jackfruit and Sri Lankan vegetables such as young jackfruit, breadfruit and banana blossom in brine, ready Sri Lankan curries and curry mixes. On the sweet side there are tropical jams, fruit cordials, sherbet syrup and kithul and coconut treacle. The savoury jars cover seeni sambol, katta sambol, coconut sambol, lunu miris, chilli paste and Sri Lankan pickles, with lime pickle, mango chutney and candied peel for baking.
Woodapple jam on toast or with cream crackers is a taste of a Sri Lankan childhood, and nelli or passion fruit cordial is diluted with chilled water for visitors. Kithul treacle is poured over curd and used in kavum and aluwa. Jackfruit and breadfruit from the tin become polos curry or a dry tempered dish with mustard seeds and curry leaves, saving hours of peeling and boiling. Seeni sambol fills string hopper and kiri bath plates, katta sambol and lunu miris go alongside hoppers, and candied peel goes into Christmas cake and love cake.
Refrigerate sambols and pickles once opened and use a clean, dry spoon, and keep cordials in the fridge after the seal is broken. To compare MD with other Sri Lankan labels, browse our sambols collection and the Wijaya range.
