Dealicious Mealz Desi Gur is traditional Indian jaggery: unrefined cane sugar boiled down and set into firm golden-brown blocks. It has a deep caramel and molasses flavour that white sugar cannot match, which is why gur turns up in so many North Indian sweets, winter snacks and festive dishes. This 1kg resealable jar comes from India and suits households that cook with gur regularly.
How to use it
Break off a piece with a sturdy knife or grate it for quick melting. For Navratri and Diwali, melt gur with a splash of water, simmer to a thick syrup and stir in roasted sesame, peanuts or puffed rice to set chikki and laddoos. A small piece stirred into masala chai, kheer or sweet chapati dough gives a rounded sweetness, and many families finish a meal with a nugget of gur on its own. Store the jar tightly closed so the blocks stay firm.
