Dealicious Mealz Desi Gur is unrefined Indian cane jaggery, set into firm blocks with the rich toffee and molasses taste that gives gur its place in Indian kitchens. It is the classic sweetener for winter snacks, temple prasad and festive mithai, and a little goes a long way. The 500g jar is a handy size for occasional cooking and keeps the blocks clean and dry between uses.
How to use it
Chop or grate the gur, then melt it over a low heat with a spoonful of water until it turns into a glossy syrup. Stir in roasted peanuts or sesame and press into a greased tray for chikki, or fold through roasted wheat flour and ghee for atta laddoos during Navratri and Diwali. It also sweetens chai, kheer and dal in Gujarati and Maharashtrian cooking, and a small piece after dinner is a long-standing habit in many homes.
