Niru Lump Sugar is kalkandu, the small clear sugar crystals known in North India as mishri. Made from 100% sugar and imported from India, the crystals are crunchy and slowly dissolving, with a clean sweetness. They are a familiar part of temple offerings and home pujas, and a jar of kalkandu often sits next to fennel seeds after meals. This 200g bag is enough for a festive season of prasad.
How to use it
Offer a small bowl of crystals with raisins and almonds as prasad during Navratri aarti or Diwali Lakshmi puja, and share it with guests afterwards. Mix a spoonful with roasted saunf as an after-meal mouth freshener. In cooking, kalkandu is used in kalkandu pongal and kalkandu vadai, and a few crystals stirred into warm milk with a pinch of cardamom make a simple bedtime drink. Crush the crystals with a rolling pin if you need them to melt quickly.
