Niru Jaggery is Indian cane jaggery cut into neat golden-brown cubes, packed in a resealable bag that keeps the pieces from drying out or picking up moisture. Made from 100% sugar cane, it has the rich, toffee-like taste of traditional gur, and the cubes are easy to measure out by the piece. The 400g pack is imported from India by Niru (Europe) in Mitcham.
How to use it
Grate or crush the cubes and melt them with a splash of water for a smooth syrup, then use it in gur ki kheer, payasam, til ladoo or peanut chikki. During Navratri, many families sweeten vrat dishes with jaggery: try it in sabudana kheer, a rajgira and jaggery ladoo or a simple makhana and jaggery mix. A small piece after a meal is a familiar habit in many Indian homes, and a cube also rounds off the sourness of tamarind rasam, sambar and Gujarati dal.
