East End Munaqa are jumbo raisins with seeds, the large dark dried grapes known across South Asia as munakka. They are softer, stickier and more intensely fruity than everyday raisins, with a deep wine-like sweetness, and they have long been a favourite in Pakistani and Indian households for soaking, cooking and festive dry fruit trays. Produce of Pakistan, packed for East End Foods of West Bromwich.
How to use it
Soak munaqa in water overnight, slit and remove the seeds, then eat them on their own in the morning or chop them into breakfast porridge. Fried briefly in ghee, they make a glossy garnish for kheer, sewaiyan, zarda and festive pulao. For Navratri and Diwali, add chopped munaqa to dry fruit laddoos, panjiri and gajar halwa, or place them on a dry fruit platter with almonds and cashews for visiting family. Keep the carton closed in a cool cupboard.
