East End Abjosh are jumbo raisins with seeds, sold under their Urdu name on the front of the carton. Abjosh are large, plump golden-brown raisins from Pakistan with a rich, honeyed sweetness and a pleasant chew, prized in Pakistani and North Indian homes for festive cooking and for snacking. The 100g carton is packed for East End Foods of West Bromwich.
How to use it
Soak a handful in warm water for ten minutes to plump them, then remove the seeds if you prefer. Fry them briefly in ghee until they puff and scatter over kheer, sheer khurma, sewaiyan or zarda rice, or fold them into pulao with cashews. For Navratri and Diwali, add them to sooji halwa, gajar halwa and dry fruit laddoos, and set out a bowl alongside almonds and pistachios for guests. Many families also soak a few overnight and eat them first thing in the morning.
