Dealicious Mealz Desi Shakkar is powdered Indian jaggery, made from cane juice that is boiled down and crumbled into a soft brown granule. It tastes of toffee and molasses, measures like sugar and melts quickly, so it slips easily into everyday cooking. The 500g jar is a sensible size if you are trying jaggery in your kitchen for the first time.
How to use it
Stir a spoonful into masala chai or warm milk, or sprinkle it over hot roti with a little ghee for a simple Punjabi treat. During Navratri, sweeten sooji or singhare ka sheera with shakkar, and use it for Diwali besan laddoos by mixing it into the roasted besan and ghee once the pan has cooled slightly. It can replace brown sugar in most cakes and biscuits. Press out any lumps with the back of a spoon if the jar has been open for a while.
