      About Batchelors

Batchelors is a long-established British food brand, known to most UK households for its tinned peas, packet soups and instant noodles. Its tins have been a cupboard fixture in British kitchens for generations, and the mushrooms we stock follow the same idea: a fresh vegetable prepared and sealed so it keeps for months on the shelf.

Our Batchelors range sits in sweetcorn, peas and mushrooms, part of the wider tinned vegetables collection. The mushrooms are sliced button mushrooms, packed in a liquid that simply drains away in a sieve, so there is no washing, trimming or slicing before they go into the pan.

In a British Asian kitchen, tinned mushrooms are a shortcut for mushroom bhaji, a mushroom and pea curry, or a matar mushroom masala where the gravy is built from onion, tomato and garam masala. They go into egg fried rice and chow mein, into a creamy chicken and mushroom pie filling, and onto toast with garlic butter. Because they are already cooked, add them in the final few minutes so they stay tender and do not shrink further.

Rinse the slices after draining if the dish is already well seasoned, and pat them dry before frying so they brown instead of steaming. Any leftover mushrooms keep for a couple of days in a covered dish in the fridge, never in the open tin. For other cupboard vegetables, compare our tinned tomatoes and jackfruit and Sri Lankan vegetables.
