Layer the crumbs with freshly grated coconut in a pittu maker and steam for about eight minutes until steam comes freely through the top. Serve with coconut milk and a hot curry, or with banana and sugar. For string hoppers, scald the flour with boiling water, knead briefly to a soft dough and press through an idiyappam mould onto trays to steam.
