The powder is maize starch with salt, annatto for colour and flavouring, with no artificial colours; the custard gets its creaminess from the milk and sugar added at home. The 250g drum makes around 28 portions. Measure 1 pint (568ml) of cold milk, add about 2 tablespoons of it and stir to a smooth paste, stir in the rest of the milk, then heat, stirring continuously, until gently boiling. In an 800W microwave, mix the same in a large bowl of at least 2 litres and heat on full power for 6 minutes, whisking halfway and again at the end. This makes 4 servings. Skimmed, semi-skimmed, whole, coconut or almond milk all work, and more or less milk and sugar changes the thickness and sweetness. It is also the base for trifle, custard slices and Indian fruit custard.

Good to know

Contains no artificial colours

May contain milk

Suitable for vegetarians

Once made up, keep in the fridge and treat as fresh food

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1101/7433/9411/files/birds-original-custard-powder-250g-front.png?v=1792087468
